Meer - Aake Sajjaada Nashin Qais Hua Mere Baad

Aake Sajjaada Nashin Qais Hua Mere Baad

Aake Sajjaada Nashin Qais Hua Mere Baad
Na Rahi Dasht Mein Khaali Koi Jaa Mere Baad

Chaak Karna Hai Isi Gham Se Girebaan-E-Kafan
Kaun Kholega Tere Band-E-Qabaa Mere Baad

Wo Hawa-Khaah-E-Chaman Hoon Ki Chaman Mein Har Subah
Pehle Main Jaata Tha Aur Baad-E-Sabaa Mere Baad

Tez Rakhna Sar-E-Har Khaar Ko Aiy Dasht-E-Junoon
Shaayad Aa Jaaye Koi Aabla-Paa Mere Baad

Muhn Pe Rakh Daaman-E-Gul Royenge Murgaan-E-Chaman
Har Ravish Khaak Udaayegi Saba Mere Baad

Baad Marne Ke Meri Qabr Pe Aaya Woh ‘Meer’
Yaad Aayi Mere Eisaa Ko Dawaa Mere Baad

  2. My take on matla of this great ghazal:

First misra: aa ke sajjada nashin Qais hua meray baad.
Sajjada nashin is the top ranking person, or in charge, or chieftain at a mazaar. Poet is claiming to be the original aashiq (lover), so much so that even Qais (name of Majnoo) took this position of chieftain of aashiqs after him.

Second misra: na rahi dash mein khali koi jah meray baad
True ushshaq (lovers) are supposed to roam around in dasht (desert). Note that dasht is a lonely place and aashiq is supposed to torture himself by spending time in wilderness of dasht. Poet is claiming that he was the original aashiq , and after him there were so many copy cats that dasht or desert was full of ushshaq and there was no space left.

In short, poet is so proud of his true love that he believe nobody matches him and rest lovers are just copy cats, including Qais, who is the most famous lover.

Your explanation of the first verse of this very difficult to understand poem is much appreciated.
Could you also expand on the other verses. Thanks.

  5. @akhtar thank you so much. I think late Mehdi Hassan has done justice to this ghazal. So much "soz" in his rendition. Despite knowing very little Urdu, I have heard this ghazal may be 100 times
