Mirza Muhammad Rafi, known by his pen name Sauda, was one of the greatest classical Urdu poets, celebrated for his mastery of both ghazal and satire (shahr ashob). Born in Delhi, Sauda is considered one of the three pillars of 18th-century Urdu poetry along with Mir Taqi Mir and Mir Dard. His poetry is characterized by its linguistic power, vivid imagery, and remarkable versatility. While his ghazals explored traditional themes of love and mysticism with classical elegance, Sauda's satirical poetry was revolutionary in its sharp wit and fearless critique of social hypocrisy. His qasidas (panegyrics) are considered masterpieces of classical form, demonstrating his complete command over Urdu language and poetic conventions. Sauda witnessed the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of regional powers, and his poetry reflects the tumultuous times he lived in. After the chaos in Delhi, he migrated to Lucknow where he received royal patronage. His work represents the pinnacle of classical Urdu poetry and his influence on subsequent generations has been immense.
