Khawaja Altaf Husain, known as Hali, was a revolutionary Urdu poet, critic, and reformer who played a crucial role in modernizing Urdu poetry and literature. Born in Panipat, Hali was a close associate of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and actively supported his educational and social reform movement. He is best known for his monumental poem "Musaddas-e-Hali" (Musaddas Madd-o-Jazr-e-Islam), which lamented the decline of Muslims and called for their social and educational awakening. Hali's literary criticism, particularly his work "Muqaddama-e-She'r-o-Sha'iri," revolutionized Urdu literary thought by introducing the concept of natural poetry. He advocated for poetry that dealt with real-life issues rather than merely traditional themes of love and wine. Hali's poetry combined aesthetic beauty with social purpose, making him a pioneer of purposeful literature in Urdu. His biography of Ghalib is considered a masterpiece of Urdu prose. Hali's contribution to Urdu literature extends beyond poetry to include literary criticism, biography, and social reform.
