Akhlaq Mohammed Khan, known by his pen name Shahryar, was a distinguished Urdu poet and lyricist who achieved rare success in both serious poetry and film music. Born in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Shahryar's poetry is characterized by its lyrical beauty, philosophical depth, and contemporary sensibility. He was a professor at Aligarh Muslim University and his academic background enriched his poetic work. Shahryar's ghazals and nazms explored themes of love, time, memory, and human existence with remarkable subtlety and grace. He achieved unprecedented recognition when his song "Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho" from the film Arth won him the Filmfare Award, making him one of the few serious poets to succeed in commercial cinema. His lyrics for films like "Gaman" and "Umrao Jaan" are considered masterpieces that elevated Hindi film music. Shahryar received the Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary honor, for his contribution to Urdu literature.
