Bahadur Shah Zafar was the last Mughal emperor of India and a gifted Urdu poet whose verses expressed the tragedy of a dying empire and the personal anguish of exile. Born in Delhi, Zafar was more inclined towards poetry, music, and arts than governance. He was a disciple of the great poet Ibrahim Zauq and became an accomplished poet himself under the pen name "Zafar." His poetry is characterized by its melancholic beauty, spiritual depth, and expression of loss and longing. Zafar's famous ghazal "Lagta Nahin Hai Dil Mera Ujde Dayar Mein" written from his exile in Rangoon, captures the pain of separation from his beloved Delhi. He was nominally involved in the 1857 revolt against the British, which led to his trial and exile to Rangoon where he spent his final years in captivity. His poetry from exile is particularly poignant, expressing the grief of a fallen emperor far from home. Despite his tragic fate, Zafar's poetry survived and continues to be celebrated for its emotional depth and historical significance. He represents the end of an era and his verses remain a testament to the cultural richness of Mughal India.
